PM 502: Managing Product Managers and Implementing Product Management
Course Description

Sequent's core curriculum helps product managers learn how to interpret processes and utilize best practices to optimize the performance of their products and services. However, the incorporation of these methods and tools is dependent on the ability of management to coach, guide, and develop the skills of product managers and marketers. This course offers a framework to help those managers to cultivate the experience profiles and competencies of the practitioners for whom they are responsible, within the context of our unique process models, tools, and best practices.

The course begins with an overview of the current trends and business issues faced by modern organizations, as well as an overview of the most important practices used by best-in-class companies around the world -- companies we've benchmarked over the past 16 years! We'll provide you with a foundation in product management activities used across the life cycle, from new product development, commercialization, and the efficient management of existing products.

One of the most important dimensions of this program has to do with establishing experiential guidance for product managers and product marketing managers. We'll show you how to secure a baseline understanding of their key skills and experiences, and how you can use that to create experiential performance plans and objectives so that your employees can grow and learn. Finally, we'll equip you with the key coaching skills you'll need to build rapport, communicate effectively, and improve performance.

The overarching goal of this class is to develop the manager's expertise and understanding in the following areas:

  • Ensuring a common understanding of best-in-class methods and practices for the product management groups they lead
  • Working with other key team leaders to:
  • Improve communication among product line managers
  • Minimize duplication of effort
  • Reduce inconsistencies in product management practices across the organization
  • Rationalize product platforms
  • Share market and competitive information
  • Working with other business function leaders to improve communication and enable optimum, joint business decisions
  • Synchronizing on common business metrics to avoid organizational conflict
  • Establishing, and adhering to, a standard phase-gate new product development and introduction process with project gate reviews/decision points
  • Selecting and agreeing on team performance metrics
  • Conducting monthly product performance reviews for products in-market
  • Understanding and managing the capabilities of your team
  • Performing knowledge/experience capability assessments
  • Establishing growth targets
  • Creating job descriptions
  • Succession planning
  • Setting the stage to coach, guide, and develop your staff
  • Cross-functional team management -- understanding team dynamics and personality types in creating high performance product teams
